The bird marsh

An exceptionally well-preserved natural area…

Nestled in the heart of the Ile d’Oléron, in the commune of Dolus d’Oléron, Marais aux Oiseaux is set in a natural area of deciduous woods bordered by former salt marshes.

More than 60 species and 500 animals enjoy this unique environment, a haven for a multitude of migratory and sedentary bird species.

The tour begins with a visit to an educational mini-farm, where children can get up close and personal with familiar birds. A few hundred meters further on, a number of local species can be observed in their natural environment (ducks, geese, herons, birds of prey…). A 9-metre-high observatory offers a panoramic view of the surrounding landscape, allowing visitors to observe the wild birds that frequent the area.

The Marais aux Oiseaux also houses a rescue center, not open to the public, which takes in injured or sick animals – around 400 a year. Pampered by vets, they are then released back into the wild.
